Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Click and drag the long vowel aw sound to make words
  • Click the instruction box for the next word, or to make Mango go flying with her friends
  • Continue clicking and dragging the aw sounds until the game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make aw type words by clicking and dragging the aw sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small card (A4 pdf) with the aw sound on, prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf), individual whiteboards and pens, list of words (A4 pdf) from the game

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel aw sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the small card with the aw sound on it to the class. Ask the pupils to practice saying the sound and to generate some aw sounding words.
  • Teacher to list these words on the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the aw Sound on to the interactive whiteboard.
  • Read the instructions with the class.
  • Teacher to model clicking and dragging the aw sound to make new words. Teacher to say the word ensuring the word is correctly sounded out.
  • For extra fun, pupils can be shown the height meter which changes as the reading game progresses.
  • Pupils to play the game, involve as many as possible by selecting pupils to drag the aw sound and to click the instructions that generate the next aw word, or make Mango fly.
  • Teacher to check the words in the reading game against the original aw word list that was created at the start of the lesson. How many words are the same?
  • Teacher to provide the pupils with the small handheld whiteboards and pens (paper and pencils if boards not available).
  • Pupils to list as many words as they can remember from the reading game, plus any extra aw words that they can think of.
  • Allow some time for the above then select some pupils to read out two words from their list.
  • PLENARY: Ask pupils for ideas to help make up a long sentence using the words from the interactive reading game and their list. Teacher to scribe the sentence on to the large whiteboard and pupils to copy on to their small whiteboards. As a class, read out the sentence and count how many aw words are in it.

Literacy Homework

Continue work from the plenary by asking pupils to use the prepared literacy homework sheet to write a really long sentence using as many aw words as they can. Ask the pupils to make the sentence as different as they can from the sentence that was created during the plenary.

Interactive whiteboard, PCs or laptops, word processing software, small card (A4 pdf) with the aw sound on it, small cards (A4 pdf) with words from the game on, prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel aw sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the aw Sound on to the interactive whiteboard in the computer lab / suite.
  • Teacher to read the reading game instructions with/to the class. Can anyone think of any aw sounding words?
  • Pupils to generate aw words.
  • Teacher to instruct the class that they are going to play the game and then collect an aw type word card. Using word processing software the pupils will write one sentence using the aw word on their card.
  • Teacher to demonstrate how to use the reading game by clicking and dragging the first sequence of aw words.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to ensure that each computer in the lab / suite has the aw long vowel reading game loaded.
  • Pupils to play the game in pairs or singly, depending on the number of PCs / laptops available. If sharing a computer, then pupils to take turns using the mouse.
  • Both teacher and teaching assistant to to move around all computers to monitor and assist, ensuring that the game is being played correctly and that words made are being sounded out.
  • As pupils complete the game they should indicate that they are ready for the next task. Pupils to collect a word card (or more than one word card if they are very able) from the teacher and use the word processing software to write a sentence with the aw word(s) that they have collected. Less able could either play the reading game again or type a sentence scribed by the teacher or teaching assistant on the classroom's whiteboard.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to select pupils from different ability groups to read out their sentence, or for the less able to say one or two words from the reading game.

Literacy Homework

Use the prepared literacy homework sheet and choose from the given aw words to complete three sentences.
