  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to select two pupils to come to the front of the class. Give the pupils the cards showing the letter e and the letter a. Ask pupils to say both sounds and to generate some words that begin with each one.
  • Now ask the pupils to stand side by side, close together and showing their sound cards to the class. Teacher to explain that when 'e' and 'a' stand side by side in a word their sound changes to ea.
  • Teacher to show the small card with a leaf on it and encourage the class to generate some more ea words. Teacher to list these words on the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ea Sound on to the interactive whiteboard. Teacher to read the instructions with the class.
  • Teacher to model clicking and dragging the ea sound to make new words, ensuring that as each word is formed it is sounded out with the class's help.
  • Teacher to select pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag the ea sounds and for clicking the instruction box that makes Mango go flying with her friends. Involve as many pupils as possible, if time allows, play the reading game more than once.
  • Teacher to ensure that the ea words are being sounded out when they are blended.
  • For extra fun, point out the height meter to the pupils (top right hand corner of the reading game) - how high can Mango go?
  • PLENARY: Teacher to hand out the small individual whiteboards and pens (or paper and pencils) and ask pupils to write a sentence using an ea word from the list. Teaching assistant to work with the less able and help with ideas or act as a scribe. The more able pupils should be encouraged to write more than one sentence. Allow time for writing then select some pupils to read out what they have written.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared homework sheet, pupils to write as many ea words as they can remember from the reading game, plus add some extra ea words that they have thought of. They could illustrate some of these.
