Overview

Context of Lesson

To make ee words by clicking and dragging the ee sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small card (A4 pdf) with green star on it, multiple cards (A4 pdf) with the ee sound on them, consonant cards (A4 pdf) with 's', 'sh', 'gr', 'fr', 'st', 'd', 'p' and 't', list of words (A4 pdf) from the reading game, homework literacy worksheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel ee sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to begin the literacy lesson by showing the small card with a green star on it, ask the pupils to say what colour the star is. Then ask the pupils to think of some words that sound like green.
  • As ee words are generated, teacher to list them on the whiteboard, other ee sounding words (e.g. meat, Daddy etc) could be put into a separate list.
  • Allow a short amount of time for this part of the literacy lesson.
  • Teacher to then load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making words with the ee sound. Teacher to read the instructions with the class.
  • Teacher to model clicking and dragging the first sequence of ee words to demonstrate how the reading game works.
  • Teacher to invite selected pupils to the interactive whiteboard in order for them to click, drag and say the ee words. Teacher could invite other children to the board to click the instruction bubbles that either introduce a new ee word or make Mango go flying with her friends.
  • For extra fun, teacher to point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the screen - how high can Mango go? Additionally the parrots can also be counted.
  • Depending on time, the reading game could be played again to allow more pupils to click, drag and say the ee words.
  • PLENARY: Explain to pupils that they will be working with a partner and give each pair of pupils a card with the long vowel phoneme ee on it, plus two other sound cards (which could include a blend card). Ask pupils to use their cards to make a word with an ee sound in it. When they have made a word(s) ask pairs of pupils to stand up and say the word(s) they have made. Teaching assistant to work with less able encouraging them to sound out any ee word(s) they make.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared homework literacy worksheet, pupils to choose three words from those given and write them in list form with a drawing for each ee word.

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ee Sound. Read the on-screen instructions with the pupils and introduce them to Mango the parrot.
  • Ask the pupils if they can think of any ee sounding words.
  • Explain to pupils that they are going to help Mango fly up high by making ee words. Teacher to instruct pupils that once they have completed the reading game that they must come and collect an ee word card and use a drawing programme to draw a picture for the ee word on their card.
  • Before letting the pupils play the game, teacher to model clicking and dragging the ee sounds to make new ee words. Teacher to sound out each new word created.
  • Pupils to play the reading game either in pairs or singly, depending on the number of PCs or laptops available. If sharing a computer then pupils to take turns in using the mouse.
  • Both teacher and teaching assistant to move around all computers, monitoring and assisting where necessary. Also ensuring that ee words are being sounded out when they have been formed.
  • As pupils complete the game, they should indicate that they are ready for the next task and collect a small card with an ee word on it. More able pupils to collect more than one ee word card.
  • Pupils to access a drawing programme and illustrate the word on their ee card. Teaching assistant to work with all pupils to help them access the drawing programme.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to select pupils to say the word that they had to illustrate, and list these on the whiteboard. Can anyone think of an ee word that was NOT in the reading game. Add these extra words to the list. Add any ee sounding words that are not spelt with ee to a separate list (e.g. meat, Daddy).

On the prepared homework sheet, pupils to choose two words and put them into a sentence
