Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Look at the long vowel phonemes er and ir at the bottom of the reading game
  • Look at the incomplete words in the box
  • Drag the correct long vowel to form an er word or an ir word
  • Continue until all words are complete - watch Mango make her way up the tree
  • Continue until reading game is finished
  • Undo an answer by clicking on the bee

Context of Lesson

To use the correct long vowel phoneme, er or ir, to form new words

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, individual whiteboards and pens, small card (A4 pdf) with the er sound on it, small card (A4 pdf) with the ir sound on it, picture cards (A4 pdf) of a letter, a pepper pot, a bird and a shirt, word cards (A4 pdf) for letter, pepper, bird, and shirt, prepared homework literacy worksheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and use alternative ways of spelling the phonemes already taught, e.g. er sound can be spelt with ir
  • Begin to understand which words contain which spelling alternatives

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class, one-by-one, the picture cards of a letter, a pepper pot, a bird and a shirt. Ask pupils to say each word.
  • Teacher to show the word cards (letter, pepper, bird, and shirt) for each of the above picture cards and ask pupils to help match the word to the picture.
  • Explain that although the words sound the same, they look different - show the class the small cards with the er and ir sounds on. Ask the pupils to say each sound.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the er and the ir sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher to read the on-screen instructions with the class, start the game, then model clicking and dragging the er and ir sounds to complete words. Ensure that each new word is sounded out as it is formed - encourage the class to participate.
  • Allow pupils to play the reading game, selecting as many as possible and encouraging all to participate by saying the completed words. If time allows the game could be played again.
  • Tell the pupils that they are going to help the teacher make a silly sentence about Mango using the words from the reading game. Teacher can start the sentence and scribe it on the whiteboard with pupils contributing to complete it, e.g. Mango the bird wore a skirt and a shirt, and never gave a number to a letter.
  • PLENARY: Give out the small whiteboards and pens and ask pupils to work in pairs, with one scribing and the other spelling. Ask them to make another silly sentence. Teacher and teaching assistant should work with less able, scribing and/or giving ideas.
  • Allow some time for this, then select a few pairs to stand up and read out their sentence.

Literacy Homework

Using the prepared homework sheet, pupils to draw a picture of Mango and write a sentence about the game.

Individual Computer / Computer Suite Lesson Plan

Interactive whiteboard, PCs or laptops, small card (A4 pdf) with the er sound on it, small card (A4 pdf) with the ir sound on it, picture cards (A4 pdf) of a letter and a shirt, prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and use alternative ways of spelling the phonemes already taught, e.g. er sound can be spelt with ir
  • Begin to understand which words contain which spelling alternatives
  • Use keyboard skills to type simple texts
  • Word process short narrative and non-narrative texts

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the small cards of the er sound and the ir sound - ask pupils to say the sounds. Tell pupils that although these letters look different they make the same sound.
