Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Look at the long vowel phonemes ew and oo at the bottom of the reading game
  • Look at the incomplete words in the box
  • Drag the correct long vowel to form an ew word or an oo word
  • Continue until all words are complete - watch Mango make her way up the tree
  • Continue until reading game is finished
  • Undo an answer by clicking on the bee

Context of Lesson

To use the correct long vowel phoneme, ew or oo, to form new words

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, individual whiteboards and pens, small card (A4 pdf) with the ew sound on it, small card (A4 pdf) with the oo sound on it, prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize and use alternative ways of spelling the phonemes already taught, e.g. ew sound can be spelt with oo
  • Begin to understand which words contain which spelling alternatives

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class the small cards with the ew and oo sounds on. Teacher to explain that these sounds look different but sometimes they sound the same. Teacher to generate some words for both sounds and list in two columns on the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ew and oo Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard.
  • Read the on-screen instructions with the class and explain that the pupils are going to help
  • Mango get to her nest by choosing the correct sound to finish the words.
  • Teacher to model clicking and dragging the ew and oo sounds to complete the words and saying each new word as it is completed.
  • Allow the pupils to play the reading game by selecting individuals to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag the sounds - involve as many pupils as possible.
  • At the end of the game, ask pupils if they can think of any words with ew or oo that are not in the game. As pupils generate the words, teacher to add them to the list on the whiteboard. How many did they think of? Teaching assistant to help less able generate some words.
  • PLENARY: Split the class into two groups, the ew group and the oo group. Give out the small whiteboards and pens. Pupils to write a short sentence containing a word that has the sound for their group. Allow some time for this. Teacher to select pupils to read out their sentences to the class. Teacher to check ew and oo words are spelt correctly.

Literacy Homework

Using the prepared homework sheet, pupils to choose the correct sound to complete the given words.

  • Word process short narrative and non-narrative texts

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ew and oo Sound on to the computer suite's interactive whiteboard. Discuss the characters shown (Roy and Mango), what might they be up to today?
  • Explain to pupils that Mango needs help to get to her nest because she has got very confused with her spelling.
  • Ask the pupils to say the sounds that are on the game's start page. Ask the pupils if they can generate some words for the ew sound and then for the oo sound.
  • Read the on-screen instructions with the class, teacher to start game and model clicking and dragging the ew and oo sounds to complete the words. Teacher to ensure that each new word formed is sounded out, encouraging participation from the class.
  • Explain to pupils that they will be working in pairs and must take turns sharing the mouse.
  • Pupils to play the reading game. Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computers ensuring that the game is being played correctly and supporting where necessary.
  • At the end of the game, pupils to move to a word processing programme and type two sentences about Roy or Mango. Pupils to include an ew word and an oo word from the game in their sentences, e.g. Roy lived in a zoo, Mango flew for a view.
  • PLENARY: Select a few pupils to read out a sentence they have typed. Check spelling of the ew and oo words used.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared homework literacy worksheet, pupils to write two sentences (one for each sound) and illustrate. Ask the pupils to think of different sentences from the ones they typed in the lesson.
