Show pupils the word cards with y words on (why, fly, cry, sky, sty, try) - repeat with igh words (high, thigh, tight, right, light, sigh).
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the igh and y Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard. Explain to the pupils they are going to help Mango get to her nest by choosing the correct sound to finish the words. Teacher to demonstrate clicking and dragging the igh and y sounds to complete the words. Teacher to say each word as it is completed - encourage the class to participate.
  • Allow the class to play the game by selecting pupils one-by-one to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag a sound. Involve as many pupils as possible.
  • At the end of the reading game, ask pupils if they can think of any words with igh or y that were not in the game. As pupils generate words, teacher to list them on the whiteboard in two columns. How many did they think of? Teaching assistant to help less able to generate some more words.
  • PLENARY: Randomly hand out the word cards from the beginning of the lesson. Ask pupils to look carefully at their card. If it is an igh word, can they stand up HIGH on tip toes with their word card held above their head and say their word. Class to say if they are correct or not. Pupils with y words to stand up and read out their word, show class. Class to check and agree/disagree.
