Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Click and drag the long vowel oo sound to make new words
  • Click the instruction box for the next word, or to make Mango go flying with her friends
  • Continue clicking and dragging the oo sounds until the reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make oo words by clicking and dragging the oo sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, individual whiteboards and pens (or paper and pencils), small card (A4 pdf) with the word zoo on it, prepared literacy homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel oo sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class the small card with the word zoo on it and select a pupil to say the word. Ask the class if they can generate some words that sound the same as zoo. Teacher to list these oo words on the whiteboard. Any alternative words (such as blew, through etc.) should be written in a cluster on the other side of the board. Teacher to explain that these words sound like oo words but are spelt differently.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the oo Sound on to the interactive whiteboard. Look at the characters of Roy and Mango and talk about them - what might they be up to today?
  • Teacher to read the on-screen instructions with the class. Teacher to start the reading game and model clicking and dragging the oo sound to form new oo words. Teacher to sound out each new oo word as it is blended.
  • For extra fun, the teacher could point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the reading game - how high can Mango go?
  • Select pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard one at a time to click and drag the oo sounds to make words. Encourage the whole class to participate in sounding out each new word as it is formed.
  • Involve as many pupils as possible - it may be necessary to play the reading game more than once.
  • Teacher to then hand out the individual whiteboards and pens. Teacher to say a short sentence which includes an oo word, e.g. Roy was in the zoo. Pupils to write the sentence on their whiteboard.
  • Teaching assistant to work with less able and assist them to just write the oo word in the sentence.
  • PLENARY: Still keeping the whiteboards, teacher to ask pupils to write a simple sentence of their own which has an oo word in it. Allow some time for this then teacher to select pupils to read out their sentence to the class.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared literacy homework sheet, pupils to draw a ring around all the words containing the oo sound.

Interactive whiteboard, PCs or laptops, small card (A4 pdf) with the oo sound on it, small cards (A4 pdf) with words from the reading game, word processing programme, prepared literacy homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills
  • Use mouse and keyboard skills to compose and present work

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the oo Sound on to the computer suite's / lab's interactive whiteboard. Teacher and class to discuss the characters they can see - what might they be up to?
  • Teacher to explain that poor Mango has got confused with her oo sounds and that the pupils are going to help her get them right so that she can go flying with her friends.
  • Teacher to show the oo sound card and ask pupils to generate some words that contain that sound. Allow some time for this. Teacher to scribe these oo words on the whiteboard.
  • Teacher to read the on-screen instructions with the class. Teacher to model clicking and dragging the oo sound to make new oo words - ensuring that each new oo word is sounded out.
  • For additional fun, teacher could point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the reading game - how high can Mango go?
  • Allow the pupils to play the game either in pairs or singly depending on the number of PCs or laptops available.
  • Teacher and teaching assistant to move around all computers to ensure that the reading game is being played correctly and that the pupils are sounding out the oo words as they are formed.
  • Pupils who complete the game quickly can collect two oo word cards from the teacher. Pupils to use a word processing programme to type a short sentence for each oo word they have, e.g. I have a spoon.
  • PLENARY: Ask the pupils who have written a sentence to read it out to the class. Ask those who only played the reading game to say one of the words they can remember.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared literacy homework sheet, pupils to write and illustrate 3 words with an oo sound. More able could be encouraged to make a list of words that were NOT in the reading game. Less able could trace over the words (written by an adult) and draw a picture for each one.
