  • Continue clicking and dragging the or sounds until the reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make or words by clicking and dragging the or sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards and pens (or paper and pencils), small card (A4 pdf) with a picture of a cork on it, enlarged words from the reading game (worn, port, afford, cork, sort, form, corn, more, short), prepared homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel or sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to hold up the small card with the picture of a cork on it, ask pupils to say its name and explain that they will be learning more words with the or sound because there is a little parrot that needs their help to go flying with her friends.
  • Teacher to load the interactive game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the or Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard. Discuss the characters on the screen - what might they be up to? Teacher to read the instructions with the class, model clicking and dragging the or sounds and saying the completed or words.
  • For extra fun, teacher could point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the game - how high can Mango go?
  • Select pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag the or sound - encourage the whole class to participate in sounding out the new or words formed.
  • Involve as many pupils as possible, this may require playing the reading game more than once.
  • Teacher to ask pupils to sit in a circle, give out the individual whiteboards and pens and ask them to write an or word on their whiteboard. Allow a few moments for this then go around the circle with each pupil holding up their board and saying the or word they have written. Rest of class to say whether it is correct or not. Alternative or sound words, such as saw etc., should be praised for effort but encouraged to try again.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to put up the enlarged words (worn, port, afford, cork, sort, form, corn, more, short) from the reading game and with the class tick off the or words that have been generated. Ask the pupils to think of some extra or words that aren't there.
