  • Teacher to hold up the small card with the ow sound on it, show the picture card of the cow and ask pupils to say the word, then show the small card with the ou sound on it plus the picture card of the house, and ask pupils to say that word too.
  • Spend a few minutes generating more words for each sound.

  • Teacher to start the game, then model clicking and dragging the ou and ow sounds to form new words - words to be sounded out as they are completed. Encourage the whole class to participate.
  • Allow pupils to play the reading game by selecting them one-by-one to come to the interactive whiteboard to click and drag the ou or ow sounds - include as many pupils as possible, this may mean playing the game more than once.
  • At the end of the reading game, ask pupils if they can think of anymore ou or ow words - record these on the whiteboard.
  • PLENARY: Revise sounds again, then ask pupils to work in pairs sharing a small whiteboard - pupils to write a simple sentence with an ou word in it, and repeat for the ow sound. Teaching assistant could work with less able and act as a scribe for this activity. Teacher to select a few pairs of pupils to stand up and read out their sentences.
