Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan

Overview

  • Click and drag the long vowel ow sound to make new words
  • Click the instruction box for the next word, or to make Mango go flying with her friends
  • Continue clicking and dragging the ow sounds until the reading game is complete

Context of Lesson

To make ow words by clicking and dragging the ow sound

Resources Required

Interactive whiteboard, small individual whiteboards and pens, small card (A4 pdf) with the ow sound on it, small picture card (A4 pdf) of a bowl, prepared literacy homework sheet (A4 pdf)

Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel ow sound
  • Identify the constituent parts of the two-syllable and three-syllable words to support the application of phonic knowledge and skills

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the small card with the ow sound (as in bowl), together with the picture card of a bowl and ask pupils to say the word.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the ow Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard. With the class, read the on-screen instructions and explain that before they help Mango to fly, they need to think of some ow words that might help her.
  • Allow a few minutes for pupils to generate some words (teacher could start this process by saying the ow words bowl and snow) and list them on the whiteboard or a flip chart.
  • After a few words have been listed, teacher to start the reading game and model clicking and dragging the ow sounds to form ow words - ensuring that each new word formed is sounded out.
  • For extra fun, teacher could point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the game - how high can Mango go today?
  • Allow as many pupils as possible to click and drag the ow sounds by selecting them one-by-one to come to the interactive whiteboard. Depending on class size the game may need to be played more than once. During the game encourage the whole class to participate by sounding out the words as they are blended.
  • At the end of the game, pupils to tick off the words that they generated at the start of the lesson in comparison with the words from the reading game. How many did we get?
  • PLENARY: Teacher to hand out the small individual whiteboards and pens. Explain to pupils that the teacher will say a sentence with an ow word missing and that they must write the missing word on the whiteboard, e.g. The ---- is a black bird, I hope my plant will ---- etc. Pupils to show the words as they are written.

Literacy Homework

On the prepared homework sheet, pupils to continue this activity by choosing the correct ow word to complete the sentence.
