Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to show the class the small card with the oy sound on it and explain that when 'o' and 'y' are next to each other in a word they make the sound oy, as in boy. Teacher to explain that it is very tricky because there are many different ways of making the same sound.
  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the oy Sound on to the interactive whiteboard. Explain that poor Mango needs help to go flying with her friends and read the instructions with the class.
  • Teacher to start the reading game and model clicking and dragging the oy sounds to make new oy words, ensuring that each new oy word is sounded out as it is formed.
  • For extra fun, teacher to point out the height meter in the top right hand corner of the reading game - how high can Mango go this time?
  • Select pupils, one-by-one, to come to the interactive whiteboard to play the game. Involve as many pupils as possible which may mean playing the game more than once.
  • Throughout this process encourage the whole class to participate in sounding out the new words.
  • PLENARY: Ask pupils to sit in a circle. Teacher to give the picture card of Mango to a selected pupil who then has to say a word with the oy sound in it. The picture card is passed around the circle with each pupil saying an oy word, trying to give a new oy word each time, although it does not matter if a word is repeated.
