Learning Objectives

  • To recognise, read and spell words constructed with the long vowel y sound

Using the Reading Game

  • Teacher to load the interactive reading game Long Vowel Phonemes: Making Words with the y Sound on to the classroom's interactive whiteboard. Read the on-screen instructions with the class and discuss the characters - what might they be up to today?
  • Explain to pupils that sometimes 'y' can sound like sky and that they will be thinking of some words that sound the same.
  • Ask the pupils to think of and generate some y sounding words (words given with other y sounds, e.g. high, buy etc should be acknowledged but explanation given as to why they can't be used in this game).
  • Teacher to start the reading game and model clicking and dragging the y sounds to make y words. Teacher to ensure that the newly formed y words are sounded out as they are blended.
  • Select pupils to come to the interactive whiteboard to play the reading game. Encourage the whole class to participate in sounding out the y words. If time allows play the game more than once so more pupils can be involved.
  • PLENARY: Teacher to select a pupil and give them the picture card of Mango, explaining that when they get the card, they must try and say a word from the game. The pupils says the word then passes the picture card to another pupil. Repeated words can be accepted, but the teacher should encourage a new word each time.
