Interactive Whiteboard Lesson Plan
Overview
- Use the software’s left-hand navigation bar to navigate to the set of tricky words you’d like to play.
- Click the start button then select easy (easy option has one challenge per tricky word, hard has two challenges per tricky word).
- Once Space Zara has appeared on your screen control her by simply clicking where you’d like her to fly to.
- Explore space and find the tricky word challenges. TIP: Use the map to see where all the tricky word challenges are located. Space Zara appears as the cross-hairs on the map interface.
- Fly into the tricky word challenges to play them, then simply follow the on-screen prompts to practice learning tricky words
Context of Lesson
To explore space space using the interactive whiteboard touch screen to control Space Zara. To learn tricky words by completing each challenge: click and drag the jumbled letters to practice spelling each tricky word.
Resources Required
Interactive whiteboard, tricky words reading game software, tricky word flashcards, alphabet flashcards of individual letters for each word, prepared worksheet for homework.

To recognise automatically an increasing number of familiar high frequency words.
Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to load tricky word’s reading games software on the interactive whiteboard and select the set of tricky words for the lesson. Teacher to explain that Zara the wildebeest loves space, she loves space so much she even dreams about it. Zara is dreaming today about finding and learning tricky words hidden in space. Explain to the class that they are going to help Zara find the tricky words and then help her learn them.
- Teacher to show flashcards of the tricky words from the reading game, ask the pupils to read the words on the flashcards, saying each word several times. Explain again that they are going to help Zara find and learn these words.
- Teacher to click start then select the easy option. Teacher to demonstrate how to control Space Zara by simply clicking the screen where you’d like her to fly to. Use the map to find the tricky word challenges.
- Teacher to find first tricky word and model completing the challenge.
- Then select a pupil to take over the reading game. Allow the pupil to come to the interactive whiteboard and control Space Zara to find a tricky word challenge. Encourage the class to repeat/say each tricky word. Encourage the class to say which letter comes next when completing the challenge. Use as many different pupils as possible.
- If time allows this game could be played again to give the maximum number of pupils a chance to control Space Zara and complete a tricky word challenge.
- PLENARY: Teacher to give out alphabet cards matching one of the tricky words, e.g. other, to five pupils. Ensure the matching alphabet cards are muddled up. Ask the selected pupils to come to the front of the class holding their letter for all the class to see. Select an additional pupil to come to the front of the class and re-arrange the letter pupils so that they spell the tricky word. Class to agree whether it is right or wrong and then say the tricky word. Repeat for the remaining two words.
Literacy Homework
Use the prepared worksheet, showing the tricky words from the reading game. Ask pupils to write the tricky word three times on the given lines.
Individual Computer / Computer Suite Lesson Plan

Using the Reading Game
- Teacher to use the flashcards to show the selected tricky words (e.g. who, other, because) - ask the class to say the words several times.
- Teacher to run tricky word’s reading games software on the interactive whiteboard and select a set of tricky words for the lesson. Teacher to explain that Zara the wildebeest loves space, she loves space so much she even dreams about it. Zara is dreaming today about finding and learning tricky words hidden in space. Explain to the class that they are going to help Zara find the tricky words and then help her learn them.

- Allow pupils to play the game. More able students can start the software themselves by double clicking the desktop icon of Zara and then selecting the correct game to play. Less able to be supported by teacher and teaching assistant.
- Pupils to play the tricky words reading game either in pairs or singly depending on the number of PCs available, those working in pairs must share mouse control. Teacher and teaching assistant to move around computer suite ensuring that pupils are playing the reading game correctly and to encourage the less able.
- Please note if ear phones are being used, then volume can be adjusted via the top left volume slider.
- When teacher is satisfied that the game has been completed, to model moving on to a word processing programme. Teaching assistant could assist pupils to access this, ready for the plenary session.
- PLENARY: Teacher to show a flashcard of a tricky word from the reading game, e.g. other. Ask pupils to see how many times they can type it in a minute. Teacher to say ‘ready, steady, GO!’ and use a timer. When one minute is up, correctly typed words to be counted, pupil who has typed the most to receive trophy card. Finish lesson by showing all three tricky word flash cards again and asking pupils to say each one.
Literacy Homework
Use the prepared worksheet, complete each sentence by choosing correct tricky word, e.g. ‘I jump up and down because I am cold’
